Early galactic evolution; the early star formation and nucleosynthesis history of the Universe; astrophysical thermonuclear explosions; nucleosynthesis; and ages from nuclear chronometers. He is a co-Principal Investigator on the NSF Frontier Center "Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics," centered at Notre Dame University 2003.

Truran's research is concerned with the nuclear processes by which the elements heavier than hydrogen and helium are synthesized in stellar
and supernova environments, and with the mechanisms of nova and supernova explosions.
